dayjing,
hope is all about faith and it starts in our core selves despite all the odds and hopeless realities.

nice post. nostalgic -yes!. before cory, you were the first who blurted the sad news of ninoy's homecoming to us. i would remember you shouting at the top of your wee voice what you happened to hear from a frantic news anchor over the radio. your words then were: "gin patay ni marcos iya kontra!" in the mind of an 8 years old, you didn't even understand and you don't even know who these people were.

reverberating words for us (not literally) but more as a cry for action in our own small way. hope's real enemy is when we stop clinging to it, when we forego believing that there is always a spark somewhere and somehow light is inevitably promised.

The laws are there, but for the most part, they do not apply to elective posts on the theory that anyway, it will be up to the voters to decide.

Nepotism in our constitution is not allowed. Still we see fathers, sons, siblings, uncles, cousins in the presidency, in the senate, in congress down to the councilors and barangay captains. I heard this provision in the constitution is not followed because there is no law that has been passed for this to be implemented. Is this information right? I wonder if there will be someone in congress who will actually draft that law. If there is, do let me know. We should heavily campaign for it to be passed. It seems futile, but who knows? =)

I've always thought that Pres. Cory was not a failure, we are. We failed to stay united. We failed to work together as a people, we failed to share... So I don't blame her for our ills. I blame us. I do hope we can get our acts together very very soon!

This is how I feel when I convince helpers to think of better things to do on Sundays besides sit around Central. This is how I felt when Pinoy readers in HKG (mostly helpers) used to email me feedback about articles I wrote, even if some of them had strange, alien names like 'Nietzsche'. This is how I will always feel about living in Hong Kong: it's an ambivalence, part-acceptance of one's seemingly fortunate lot (for so one should be thankful) and yet because of this immense gratitude, one is able to give, share and be available to those in need--genuinely, and without remorse nor recluctance. :D

(I'm reacting this way because of my share of 'good news'. You know why.)

I dunno if you remember, at EDSA II, I asked you if we would do another EDSA again (or a question to that effect). I maybe more naive than you for asking those things.

In a way I think what you are also saying is that what Cory represented was a constant struggle against cynicism.
